Kanamycin Aesculin Azide Agar Base 500g is used for the isolation and enumeration of Enterococci, especially Enterococcus species from different specimens like food, water, etc. This agar composition contains kanamycin to suppress the growth of most Gram-negative bacilli and sodium azide as an additional selective agent, inhibiting the growth of other Gram-positive bacilli, except enterococci. Aesculin in the medium causes enterococci to be differentiated according to their content of aesculin, and brown colouring of the medium indicates their presence. Kana Agar Base is commonly used in general microbiological testing in environmental and food industries, as well as in clinical laboratories.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. When ready, the medium can be stored at 4°C until it is used.

pH: Normally about 7.2 ± 0.2
Preparation: Prepare the medium in distilled water by heating it to a boil to ensure complete dissolution of the medium. Autoclave at 15 lbs pressure (121°C) for 15 minutes. Cool to 45-50°C and add supplements or egg yolk if necessary.
