Lactose Broth 500g
Product Description
Lactose Broth 500g is a general-purpose culture medium that can be used to identify and differentiate lactose-fermenting and non-lactose-fermenting enteric microorganisms. It is a standard medium in microbiological laboratories to test the ability of bacteria to ferment lactose, produce acid, and gas. Lactose Broth is frequently used in conjunction with other selective and differential media to promote the growth and identification of lactose-fermenting bacteria, including *Escherichia coli* and other coliforms.
The medium is formulated with lactose as the sole fermentable carbohydrate and is capable of detecting lactose fermentation with Durham tubes, which trap any gas produced during fermentation. This helps differentiate among different enteric bacteria based on their fermentation patterns.
Key Features
Lactose Fermentation: Lactose Broth was developed to test the lactose-fermenting ability of bacteria. Lactose fermenters produce acid and gas during lactose fermentation, facilitating their detection.
Gas Production: The broth has Durham tubes that trap any gas produced by the fermenting bacteria. This characteristic helps differentiate organisms according to their gas production during fermentation.
Suitable for Coliform Testing: Frequently utilized for coliform testing, especially in food and water testing applications. Lactose-fermenting bacteria, such as *E. coli*, are widely used as indicators of fecal contamination.
Ideal for Enteric Bacteria Identification: Lactose Broth is commonly used in the lab for microbiological testing to differentiate enteric bacteria based on lactose fermentation and gas production.
High-Quality Ingredients: The medium consists of high-quality ingredients that provide an environment favoring the growth of bacteria and yield reliable and reproducible test results.
Specifications
Cat No: Lactose Broth 500g
Amount: 500g (Dehydrated powder)
Preserve: Keep in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. After preparation, keep the media at 4°C, ready for use in the short term.
Application: For the cultivation and differentiation of lactose-fermenting enteric bacteria and the enumeration of coliforms in water, food, and environmental samples.
pH: 6.8 ± 0.2 as a rule
Preparation: The medium is dissolved in distilled water and sterilized by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 min, followed by cooling to room temperature. The medium is now prepared for use following cooling.
Applications
Water Testing: Lactose Broth is commonly used to detect the presence of coliform bacteria, including *E. coli*, in water. The capacity to ferment lactose and produce gas is an essential indicator of fecal contamination level, so such a medium is widely used in water quality surveys.
Agricultural and Food Microbiology: It is used in the food industry to determine lactose-fermenting bacteria, especially in tests for coliforms in food products.
Clinical Microbiology: Lactose Broth is used in clinical labs for the cultivation and identification of enteric pathogens from patient samples, including stool, urine, or wound cultures. Lactose fermentation and gas production are essential for coliforms and enteric pathogens.
Research: Lactose Broth is recommended for use as a growth medium for studying bacterial fermentation and for identifying strains of enteric bacteria; it is also used in the cultivation of various microorganisms.
