Product Description Kligler Iron Agar
Kligler Iron Agar (KIA) 500g is a differential medium designed for the identification and differentiation of enteric bacteria. It is an essential test in a microbiological laboratory for identifying bacterial fermentation patterns, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production, and the fermentation of glucose and lactose. This medium is instrumental in the ability to recognise a variety of enteric bacteria, including pathogenic ones such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Shigella. The medium was prepared to demonstrate the ability of bacteria to ferment glucose and/or lactose, and to reduce sulfur compounds to elemental sulfur; crucial metabolic features were monitored.
Both glucose and lactose are present in fermentable carbohydrates, sodium thiosulfate provides sulfur, and phenol red indicates the pH of the medium in the Kligler Iron Agar. In clinical diagnostics, this medium is used to distinguish between enteric bacteria based on their metabolism, allowing for a more precise diagnosis of pathogens and helping in the administration of appropriate treatment. The production of hydrogen sulfide, indicated by black precipitates in the medium, is an additional way to distinguish between sulfur-reducing bacteria.
