Lysine Iron Agar (LIA) is a selective and differential medium used to differentiate Salmonella species and other enteric pathogenic microorganisms based upon their ability to decarboxylate lysine and to produce hydrogen sulphide (H2S). This agar is used frequently in food testing, isolation and enumeration of enteric bacteria and water/wastewater analysis.
Lysine Iron Agar (LIA) is a general-purpose medium that, due to its two important physiological characteristics, can sustain the growth of many enteric group bacteria. It has vast applications in the identification of organisms such as Salmonella, Shigella, and other enteric pathogens through characteristic colour changes and H2S formation in the medium.

• **Preparation**: Dissolve in dH2O or deionized water to a final volume of 1L, stirring while boiling to ensure complete dissolution. Then, adjust the volume to 1L. Sterilize by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 minutes.
