Hydrometer Specific Gravity Tester

A battery hydrometer is a tool for measuring the specific gravity of electrolyte in flooded deep cycle batteries to
determine the state of charge. A hydrometer test can also tell you how healthy the cells of your battery are before and
after performing regular maintenance on the battery. It is a very handy measurement tool for flooded lead-acid batteries
mostly found in cars, golf-carts, off-grid installations, and camping RVs.
A hydrometer uses the principle of buoyancy to measure the specific gravity (SG). This is the measure of the number of
times a fluid is denser than water. In lead-acid batteries, this measure can tell you the amount of charge in each
battery cell. You can also determine the overall health of each cell by analysing SG measurements taken over a period of
time.
To measure specific gravity using a battery hydrometer, you draw a sample of battery acid from the battery using the
hydrometer. Then you read and record the specific gravity readings from the hydrometer scale. Afterward, you use the
specific gravity chart for battery to find out the state of charge of your battery.
